Student Employment

Step 1: Determining Eligibility for Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study Program was implemented by Congress in 1964, and provides part-time employment to students with demonstrated financial need. Approximately 500 positions across campus are reserved for students with Work-Study to help ensure that they have a source of income during the school year.

A student worker will typically work less than 10 hours per week, scheduled around class and study times. However, students' total earnings are capped at their award amounts. For more information about the Federal Work-Study Program, visit the U.S. Department of Education.

To qualify for the program, the student must indicate interest in Work-Study when filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students who demonstrate sufficient financial need on the FAFSA will be awarded a specified amount of Work-Study as part of their financial package. Once the financial aid package is finalized, it can be viewed and accepted by visiting the Student Center.

Step 2: Finding a Job

If eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program, you should check the Work Study Journal to find a job that matches your interests and schedule. Once you find a suitable position, complete the Authorization Packet with your supervisor, and return it to the Office of Financial Aid, Campus Box 438. Authorization Packets are given to first-year students at the Work-Study meeting during Orientation; otherwise, they're available at the Office of Financial Aid.

If unable or ineligible to secure a Work-Study position, Gettysburg College has other opportunities for employment. Many positions are funded through departmental budgets and are available to any student irrespective of financial need. Logging into GettysburgWorks provides information about both on- and off-campus jobs that may be available. You are also encouraged to contact individual departments and to monitor the digest for open positions. If you would like help with this process, visit the Center for Career Development for assistance.

Step 3: Completing the Paperwork

Regardless of whether your job is Work-Study, the following paperwork must be completed and submitted within your first three days of work; otherwise, you will not be authorized to work on campus and cannot be paid.

If you have not worked for the College in the past, you need to submit the following information:

  1. Student Confidentiality Agreement (Download)
  2. Federal I-9 Form: Employment Eligibility Verification
  3. Tax Forms
  4. Worker's Compensation
  5. Direct Deposit

If you have worked for the College before, there are no additional forms to complete unless your home address has changed. If your home address is different, you need to resubmit the tax forms.

All forms can be obtained from your departmental supervisor, the Human Resources Office or the Payroll Office.
