Sustainability

Students at work at the Painted Turtle Farm

Gettysburg College is committed to sustainability.

From our Central Energy Plant to our residence halls, the Gettysburg College community is reducing our ecological footprint as we stride toward a greener future. A few of the steps we've taken:

• Our Environmental Studies department is among the largest at the nation’s top liberal arts colleges.

• We signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment.

• Each May, departing students donate reusable items for our Give It Up for Good Sale, raising funds for the local United Way and diverting tons of material from the waste stream.

• Produce from our student garden goes to the local food bank and our campus Dining Center. In turn, dining waste becomes compost for the garden.

• Our campus-wide recycling program has been in place for a decade.

• Our new Center for Athletics, Recreation, and Fitness will comply with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.
