Commitment & planning

Artist's conception of the Center for Athletics, Recreation, and Fitness

Gettysburg College is committed:
past, present, and future.

When we signed the Presidents Climate Commitment in 2007, pledging publicly to work toward carbon neutrality, it wasn't the beginning of Gettysburg's sustainability efforts and it certainly wasn't the end.

Serious energy-conservation efforts began in the 1980s and have grown into the myriad sustainability programs in place today, as detailed throughout this website.

Our future is clear, from green building plans for our new Center for Athletics, Recreation and Fitness (above) to the long-term vision of our institutional Strategic Directions plan.

Our campus community is united, as reflected by the Gettysburg College Sustainability Advisory Committee, which includes representatives of the student body, support staff, faculty, and administration.

Trees

Trees are a beautiful component of any landscape, but what are they worth beyond their aesthetic value?  Plenty, according to senior Gettysburg College environmental studies majors who studied the campus' more than 1,200 trees.

"Our research project goals were to inventory the existing land cover on campus, and to assess the ecological values of the trees - like absorption of air pollutants and reduced soil erosion - and their corresponding economic values," said Professor Randy Wilson.
