In honor of President Janet Morgan Riggs' inauguration and the National Day of Service, Gettysburg College students, alumni, trustees, and staff volunteered in an array of service learning projects on Sept. 11 in Gettysburg and in other communities.

From building a house with Habitat for Humanity to participating in a poverty simulation workshop on campus to organizing a benefit walk in Boston, dozens of people came together to share their time and talents with a variety of agencies and organizations. Other projects included:

• In Pittsburgh, alumni, parents, and friends volunteered at Camp Lutherlyn, a Lutheran ministry organization.
• In upstate New York, alumni, parents and friends organized supplies and prepared food at Cameron Community Ministries.
• On campus, participants discussed racial myths and confronted internalized racism, asking the question, "Are we living in Post-racial America? Gettysburg?"
• On the Appalachian Trail, participants cut branches, removed trash, and cleaned and stained a shelter.
• In Gettysburg, participants helped children with homework, played games, and exchanged English and Spanish skills at The Center/El Centro, an organization that works with Latino youth.
• In Gettysburg, volunteers donned hairnets and aprons and cooked at the Campus Kitchen at Gettysburg College, a student organization that rescues food and repackages it into meals.

I was an Associate Dean of Student Life at Gettysburg back in the 80's and worked closely with Janet Riggs when she was a young faculty member. She always went "above and beyond" in serving the College. I worked with her most closely in her role as a sorority advisor. I applaud her appointment and send my very best wishes.
